Dear customer, You need to give some lectures about the dangers of lab personnel tinkering with equipment that is malfunctioning or not working. This is a recipe for disaster and I am seeing it more and more often in academic research and training labs. The consequences range from a more seriously disabled instrument to an injury or worse. I have given group talks to PIs, lab managers and technicians about how best to avoid liability issues when it comes to equipment problems. In most cases it has to do with lack of sufficient budgets to maintain infrastructure, but scientists are inquisitive people so even when there is money to repair or replace, they like to get under the hood and start angling around for quick solutions. If someone thinks they have the expertise to do this type of work, they should come work for us and leave the scientific research profession.
